Scientific Rationale
The IFAS11 school will bring together students from different horizons, expose them to high-level specialized lectures, and propose them to carry out a six-days research project. The primary subject of the present school is IFU 3D spectroscopy. The topics range from data-reduction techniques, data analysis and modelling. The school gives preference to doctoral students and advanced master's students, without geographic restriction.
IFAS11 is the eleventh edition of a series of schools co-organized by the Center for Research in Astrophysics Lyon (CRAL) and the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, India. The first edition was held in 2015 in Pune. Subsequent schools have been hosted between Lyon and Pune every other year, and every year we host students from all over the world. This year, the school will be hosted at the Chateau de Goutelas near Lyon, France from 2 – 8 Oct, 2026.
The Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL) has been a pioneer in 3D, or integral field spectroscopy, and designed and assembled the MUSE spectrograph now in operation at the ESO's VLT. This is one of the largest and most advanced IFU spectrographs, and it has opened a new era of blind spectroscopic surveys, where, rather than targeting pre-selected sources, entire new classes of objects can be discovered out of deep fields. IUCAA is coordinating major efforts to develop theoretical and observational astronomy in India, including space-based astronomy, international projects, like the TMT, and gravitational waves, LIGO-India.
Lectures and hands-on data reduction tutorials will be given during the morning sessions, and research projects will be proposed to the participants, in smaller groups supported by a tutor. The school will be concluded by a presentation of the results of these projects.
Approximately 30 participants are selected every year. The organizers may provide a partial or full waiver of the school registration fee on demand and justification. Please contact the school organizers (ifas11 at sciencesconf.org) to provide your justification in case you need financial support. Priority for financial support will be given to students from developing countries.
School Venue
The school will be hosted at the charming Chateau de Goutelas, 277 Goutelas, 42130 Marcoux located a bit outside Lyon, France. The castle will provide accommodation and all meals for us during the whole duration of the school. As the venue is located about 1,5 hours drive outside Lyon, we will arrange a bus to pick us all up in Lyon on October 2nd. The bus will also bring us back to the central train station in Lyon on October 8th.
The school registration fee is to be paid by cash or credit card directly at the castle. The registration covering accommodation and all meals for the whole week amounts to 660 EUR for a shared room of two people.
We look forward to receiving you in Lyon.

The organization of the school would not have been possible without the financial support of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) and the CI-CNM project of J.-K. Krogager (ANR-24-CE31-7454-01) funded by the National Research Agency (ANR). The school is also partly funded by the Scientific Council of the Observatory of Lyon.
